Anticipation of the critical corrosion threshold
In reinforced concrete structures subjected to aggressive environmental conditions, chlorides migrate slowly through the pores of the concrete. Over time, they accumulate on the surface of the steel until they reach the so-called "critical chloride threshold." It is at this tipping point that the passive layer protecting the steel breaks down and the corrosion process begins irreversibly.
Detection of chlorides and contaminants
CorroChip Cover acts preventively in the preliminary phase of this process. By continuously measuring the movement and concentration of chlorides and other harmful ions through the coating, the system detects the threat of corrosion long before contaminants reach the critical threshold in the reinforcement. This early detection provides the information and the necessary margin for action to prevent damage.
Measurement of the depth of the carbonation front
Additionally, the detection system simultaneously detects the depth of the carbonation front by measuring potentials and currents, to accurately and early identify when a corrosion process is starting.
How it works
CorroChip Cover is installed in the concrete during construction, along with other sensors (such as temperature, relative humidity, and corrosion potential). Over time, the system continuously measures the movement of chlorides and other harmful ions through the concrete coating.
